At Winning Scotland, everything we do is about helping children and young people build confidence, improve wellbeing, and reach their full potential. That’s why we’re proud to align our work with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

The UNCRC is a set of rights that every child and young person is entitled to, no matter who they are or where they live. These rights help children feel safe, respected, included and supported to thrive.

What is the UNCRC?

The UNCRC is an international agreement that protects the rights of all children. It says that:

• Children have the right to an education.
• Children should be able to express their views and be listened to.
• Every child has the right to be treated fairly and equally.
• Children should grow up healthy, happy and safe.

Scotland is committed to upholding these rights, and so are we.

How Winning Scotland Supports Children’s Rights

We put children's rights at the heart of our work. Here’s how:

Supporting learning and development

We help schools and communities build environments where young people are encouraged to grow, learn and believe in themselves. This supports the UNCRC’s right to education (Article 28) and the right to develop talents and abilities to the fullest (Article 29).

 

Listening to young people’s voices

We believe young people have valuable opinions. In our programmes, we create space for them to share their thoughts and take the lead. This supports their right to be heard and involved in decisions that affect them (Article 12).

Promoting fairness and inclusion

We work in communities across Scotland to reduce inequality. Every young person, regardless of background, should have the same chance to succeed. This reflects the right to be treated fairly (Article 2).

 

Improving wellbeing and resilience

Our work focuses on building positive mental health, emotional resilience and healthy habits. This supports children's right to the best possible health (Article 24).

 

Creating safe and nurturing spaces

We support educators and adults to build trusted relationships with young people, helping them feel safe, supported and valued (Article 19).
